Tired of plain old vanilla, chocolate and strawberry in a cone? Whether you’re looking for an exciting over-the-top flavor or a work of edible frozen art, here are some magnificent ice cream concoctions put together by creative chefs across the country.
1. Golden Opulence Sundae – Serendiptity 3, New York
Perhaps the most famous ice cream dessert in America, the Golden Opulence Sundae has gotten plenty of attention because of its price tag — a hefty $1,000 —but if you’ve got the money, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime splurge. It starts with five scoops of Tahitian vanilla ice cream, which is covered in chunks of Chuo chocolate and then given thick lashings of Amedei Porceleana chocolate syrup. This is topped with marzipan cherries, gold-covered almonds, chocolate truffles and sugar-paste flowers, and there’s a scooped-out section in the middle that holds a tiny bowl of dessert caviar. The entire concoction is topped off with shavings of edible 24-karat gold, and it’s served in a Baccarat crystal goblet accessorized with 18k gold and mother-of-pearl spoons.
2. Treasure Chest – Serenditipity 3, Las Vegas
Not to be outdone by its New York location, Serendipity 3 in Las Vegas offers its solid chocolate Treasure Chest, layered in edible gold and filled to overflowing with 12 scoops of ice cream, fried Oreos, cake slices, berries and lots of drizzly syrup and whipped cream.
3. Lobster Ice Cream – Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium, Bar Harbor
Tired of the same old 31 flavors? How about butter-flavored ice cream lavished with chunks of Maine lobster? If you can’t make it to Maine, Ben & Bill’s are happy to ship their now-famous savory frozen delicacy across the country.
4. Zen Butter Ice Cream – Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, New York
At the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, you can pretend to be the Indiana Jones of frozen confectionery, sampling your way through adventurous flavors such as Wasabi, Black Sesame and local favorite Zen Butter — that’s peanut butter with sesame noodles, for the unenlightened among us.
5. Vermonster – Ben & Jerry’s, Nationwide
If you’re lucky enough to live near a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream emporium, then treat yourself to a Vermonster sundae, featuring 20 scoops of ice cream, four scoops of hot fudge, four bananas, three chocolate chip cookies, a fudge brownie, 10 scoops of chopped walnuts, eight more scoops of your favorite toppings — and hey, did we forget the whipped cream? Be warned, however, that you’ll have to take a break from your healthy food regimen, because it has 14,000 calories and packs 500 grams of yummy fat — so be sure and bring a few friends with you.
