As a nation, we love our hamburgers—and thanks to today’s creative chefs, the lowly burger can be elevated to almost unimaginable gastronomic heights. Whether you love the artisan-built burgers of nouvelle cuisine, or the good old-fashioned fast-food variety, here’s our list of some of the most divinely decadent hamburger eateries in New York City.
This popular restaurant appears regularly on top-10 hamburger lists, thanks to the Black Label — a 9-ounce patty that’s crafted of chuck skirt steak, brisket, short rib and aged prime rib, all embedded in an artisan-baked brioche bun. Accessories include the usual suspects, topped off by luscious caramelized onions.
This British-style gastropub offers a local favorite, the Chargrilled Burger — a half-pound patty that lavished with sharp Roquefort cheese and encased in a light brioche bun. It’s accompanied by a lavish helping of shoestring fries sprinkled with rosemary, giving a slightly Euro-cuisine spin to an American classic.
This New York eatery has become a landmark, catering to legendary celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra. One reason for its appeal is The Cadillac, a classic cheeseburger (named by singer Nat King Cole) that features a six-ounce seared chuck patty topped with artisan cheeses such as Vermont cheddar or buttermilk blue, and lavished with your choice of decadent frills such as béarnaise sauce, fried eggs and avocado.
4. Shake Shack
The Shake Shack may look like just another burger chain, but there’s a reason for those lines outside — and it’s called the ShackBurger. It features a delectable blend of short rib, chuck and brisket all packed in a quarter-pound patty, drenched in a proprietary mayonnaise and embedded in an artisan potato bun. According to locals, the classic burger just doesn’t come any better than this.
If you like your burgers the old-fashioned way — that is to say, messy — then you’ll love the Original 5 Napkin Burger, which features a 10-ounce chuck patty with a classic charred exterior. It’s lavished with caramelized onions and Gruyère cheese, and then dribbled with luscious rosemary aioli.
We can’t resist adding Burger & Barrel’s White Truffle Burger to our list, thanks to its extravagance — it’s slathered with Ribiola cheese, drenched in truffle aioli and then topped with thin shavings of white truffles. It’s only available during truffle season, so consult your culinary calendar for this one.
