We’re all about striking a balance between taste and getting maximum health benefits. Sure, we love our bacon double-cheeseburgers and our big, rare steaks, but we also like to chow down on a hearty quinoa salad once in a while, too. Enter Meatless Mondays, a way for omnivores like us to reap some of the benefits of a vegetarian diet without foregoing meat altogether. Giving up meat even one day a week can have a major impact on your health; people who follow a semi-vegetarian diet may have lower bad cholesterol levels and a decreased risk of getting certain types of cancers, and they’re also less likely to gain weight over time.
San Franciscans, get ready to get your recommended daily allowance of veggies and discover that meatless most definitely does not mean flavorless. Check out some of these great meatless options today!
1. Special Vegetable Curry at Udupi Palace
The Mission’s Udupi Palace is known for their all-vegetarian and vegan menu, and their veggie curry is the perfect pick-me-up for chilly fall nights. It’s spicy (but not overwhelmingly spicy), and pairs perfectly with a samosa or two.
2. Vegan Sausage at Rosamunde Sausage Grill
Whoa, whoa, whoa: hold up – vegan options at a sausage grill? You betcha. Rosamunde’s vegan sausages (selection differs daily) are just as flavorful as their meaty counterparts but leave a smaller carbon footprint. Pair with split pea soup for a filling meal.
3. Falafel Wrap at Palmyra
Meatless eating needn’t be expensive, as the Haight’s Palmyra shows. Their falafel wrap is well-seasoned, not too greasy, and also a great deal – the perfect trio! The crisp, refreshing cucumber salad is also a recommended choice.
4. Tom Yum Pak at Sweet Basil
Finding vegetarian or vegan versions of your favorite dishes can be challenging, but Bernal Heights’ Sweet Basil offers meatless (and vegan) versions of your favorite Thai dishes. Their veggie Tom Yum Pak, which substitutes tofu for animal protein, runs a good risk of becoming your new favorite soup.
5. The Rivera Salad at Frjtz
Sometimes, you find yourself in the mood for a big old salad. When that mood strikes, order from Frjtz, whose Rivera salad is packed with corn, black beans, jicama, and cabbage, all tossed in a tangy lemon-goat cheese dressing. Delish!
6. The Veggie Mushroom Seitan Sandwich at Jay’s Cheesesteak 2
Jay’s veggie mushroom seitan sando (pictured above!) finds a good balance between hearty and light. Though the sandwich is hefty, it’s hearty seitan filling is lighter than the traditional cheesesteak meat, making it satisfying but not a gut buster.
7. Vegetable Vindaloo at Spicy Bite
This veggie- and potato-rich dish is spicy and filling: perfect for a cozy fall night in! Pair with the Spicy Bite salad or the restaurant’s sweet corn soup.
