We didn’t plan it like this, but today’s bleak forecast in NYC couldn’t have been a better backdrop to our Mac & Cheese showdown! What’s lovelier than the most comforting of comfort food on a cold and rainy day?
Just like with Pizza Politics in November, we selected four restaurants with a reputation to uphold and a legend to grow. This fearsome foursome (DuMont Burger, Wildwood BBQ, Hill Country, Macbar) came from all over the city to strut their stuff and the contrast in styles showed us that there are many ways to make your mac.
Hill Country and Macbar arrived right on time, meaning they made the first impressions. Macbar may be most well known for its variety of offerings, but they really delivered (pun intended) with their Classic Macaroni, offering what some people deemed “a very wealthy man’s Kraft.” Meanwhile Hill Country’s Longhorn Cheddar variety was made with Penne and left some purists with a lot of questions and left most people still in love with Macbar.
Wildwood BBQ arrived next, bringing breadcrumbs and more texture into the competition. A pre-contest fan favorite, Wildwood offers a bit more of a thinking man’s mac and inspired some heated conversations while everyone waited for the final entrant to arrive in the tasting arena, er, conference room. And finally, just as some of us were giving up hope, the DuMac & Cheese made its appearance. And boy did it make an impression. Creamy and cheesy and loaded with bacon, yes bacon, DuMont Burger proved the old adage that good things come to those who wait.
With clear minds and full stomachs it was time to vote in four categories. The results?
The REAL Mac & Cheese of New York (best combo of cheesiness, attractiveness, taste):
DuMont Burger (42% of the vote)
Cheesiest Mac & Cheese: DuMont Burger (57%)
Most Attractive Mac & Cheese: DuMont Burger (40%)
Best Tasting Mac & Cheese: DuMont Burger (45%)
In an incredible showing, DuMont Burger scored a big victory for Brooklyn, sweeping all four categories to win SeamlessWeb’s coveted title of Real Mac & Cheese of New York! Macbar was the second strongest competitor, sweeping the silver medal in every category, but just couldn’t get over the hump in any single one. Doesn’t mean we didn’t like Hill Country and Wildwood BBQ too, but neither one could measure up to the top dogs from DuMont.
Many thanks to everyone at SeamlessWeb for eating and voting, many thanks to our mac & cheese partners for the delicious delivery, and if you like what you see, we recommend that you order some mac & cheese tonight and host your own taste test!
If you have ideas for what you’d like to see us taste next, send us an e-mail and we’ll look into making it happen!
