Chinese food is the quintessential delivery food. It’s a cuisine that one rarely prepares for themselves at home, and we tend to leave it to the professionals to deliver. In NYC we’ve got literally hundreds of Chinese establishments delivering some truly tasty food. From noodles to chicken to wontons, there is just so much deliciousness ready to be delivered at the click of a mouse or the tap of an app!
But what makes the average delivery Chinese food, great Chinese food? Well, we were on a mission to investigate. Joe’s Shanghai in Manhattan is an NYC staple serving up authentic and fantastically delicious Chinese cuisine, and are most well-known for their soup dumplings. While those famous soup dumplings are mostly enjoyed in house when dining in the restaurant, we wanted to put them to the ultimate test. Can the soup dumplings deliver?
Surprisingly, yes they can! We got two orders of soup dumplings — the Crab Meat with Pork Steamed Soup Buns and the original Pork Steamed Soup Buns. Both were served with a sauce on the side that was a vinegary soy sauce. A very nice accompaniment.
Taking soup dumplings on the road can be very tricky, and I think Joe’s Shanghai did a great job on the delivery. The flavors of the dumplings were totally there. The texture of the dough was chewy, but not too gummy. And most importantly, for the most part, the “soup” stayed inside the dumplings. While some of the liquid seeped out a bit, there was plenty of juicy goodness to enjoy.
In addition to the soup dumplings, we got an order of Dong Po Pork. This dish is a lean and fatty pork with a red bean sauce and a side of bok choy. While I actually enjoyed the bok choy a bit more than the pork (can you tell from the focus of the picture?), the meat was actually very tasty. The sauce was sweet and the pork was salty, and I am not one to turn a cheek to some pork. Overall it was a nicely balanced dish.
Thank you to Joe’s Shanghai for a delicious lunch!
