Being a foodie is no easy task. I set my standards high and I hate to be disappointed. My goal is to try a new restaurant each time I order on SeamlessWeb and I always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. This week’s selection to be scrutinized was Joy Indian Restaurant in Prospect Heights. Since I knew I would be in the area, I placed a pickup order and went with a Coconut Samosa appetizer (a combination I had never heard of, let alone tried!), Chicken Tikka Masala and a side order of Cucumber Raita.
Being the critic that I am, I rushed home to dig into my meal. At first I looked at the containers and thought “this better be good!” and to my surprise it was much much more.
To begin with, the Coconut Samosas (two of them!) were a pleasant surprise. When I bit into the flaky, golden crust I found that it encased some of the best freshly shredded coconut I have ever tasted. The mixture of lightly fried buttery pastry and coconut was simply delightful. Then I dipped a portion of the half-eaten samosa into a side of tamarind sauce and couldn’t decide which tasted better! Talk about a good problem to have…
Meanwhile, the portion of Chicken Tikka Masala and Basmati rice was definitely a meal for two, but I ate it all in one sitting. The delicately cooked morsels of chicken submerged in a creamy, tomato based sauce were too heavenly. I seriously had to stop myself from moaning. To spice things up, I tried the double dip by putting a few pieces of chicken into the Cucumber Raita, but decided it was too messy. So instead, I sparingly splashed a spoonful over some chicken and rice and indulged as if it were my last meal on earth.
On a final note, I decided against ordering a traditional Indian beverage, because I didn’t know what to expect. Luckily for me, a staff member gave me a generous cup of mango lassi. The cold yogurt drink reminded me of perfectly blended iceless smoothie and the mixture of creamy yogurt and mango, with just the right amount of sweetness, was exactly what I needed on a hot summer’s day. Overall, Joy Indian Restaurant gets an A+! The service was impeccable and the meal was even better; it’s gonna be tough to stick to my SeamlessWeb restaurant rules.
