Every week, a different SeamlessWeb customer tells us about how he or she orders from the site. This week it’s Matt, a workaholic who hates onions:
First Name: Matt (@mrw)
Occupation: President of Vector Media Group, an interactive agency here in the city.
How and When Did You Discover SeamlessWeb? My first order was in early 2006. My college roommates and I heard about it from a blog that follows the local dining scene, and we immediately knew it was for us. At the time we were spending a lot of time playing Halo when we should have been studying, so nothing was more convenient than ordering some hamburgers online from Silver Spurs while waiting for the next game to start. It was faster than calling and there wasn’t a chance for them to mis-hear our order.
(By the way: if you order from Silver Spurs, the De Senator burger with Cajun fries is the way to go.)
Where Do You Use SW? I like to use it when I’m on my way home from somewhere and am starving. This is especially easy with the iPhone app. I’ll try to time it so that by the time I get home, the delivery is in the next 5-10 minutes. (Ed: This is a difficult, yet critical skill that we’re considering adding to the SeamlessWeb interview process…)
Favorite Kind of Food: I’ll typically eat and love anything. But for SeamlessWeb ordering I really gravitate towards food that’s somewhat self-contained. Mexican food and hamburgers really fit the bill there. We also order a lot of Thai.
Least Favorite Kind of Food: My biggest dislike is definitely around anything with onions. I know they add flavor and are big parts of lots of dishes, and I’m fine if they’re cooked down. But when they’re not cooked down, their texture is really unappealing to me. Even when they’re just a small part of the dish. I get pity looks from some Mexican restaurants when I order a burrito without them, but I still enjoy it. The exception is that I’ll eat onion rings. Like many things, they get better when batter fried! (Ed: I find it difficult to slice onions without producing a fountain of tears. So your general dislike is understood.)
Favorite Place(s) to Order From on SW? I mentioned Silver Spurs before. We also love Cafetasia for Thai. Their Chicken Massaman is fantastic, as is their Tofu with Roti. And for pizza, we stick with Adriana on 20th and 3rd. Their buffalo pizza is the best I’ve had in the city. Of course, the gold standard of buffalo chicken pizza is La Piazza in Merrick, Long Island. Can SeamlessWeb get Long Island restaurants to deliver to the city?! (Ed: We’ll work on it! If you have any more suggestions shoot an email to firstname.lastname@example.org)
Least Favorite Thing About Calling Restaurants? There’s the one everybody hates: getting your order wrong. I always have adjustments like the previously mentioned “no onion rule” and there’s often some kind of misunderstanding. But my bigger issue is how quickly they hang up! The person on the phone almost never tells me my total or the estimated time of delivery. I try to ask as part of the end of my order: “And finally, we’ll have the beef fried glass noodle and how much is all this?”, but it rarely works. With SeamlessWeb I know exactly how much my order costs AND how long it will take, before I even place it.
Closest Previous Brush with Internet Fame? For the nerds reading this, I’ve been interviewed by 37signals for their product blog. (Ed: We <3 37signals.)
Favorite Celebrity Chef? David Chang of the Momofuku restaurants. I think he’s considered a celebrity at this point– he even has a Wikipedia page. I love all of the city’s Momofukus.
Favorite Cartoon Growing Up? Thundercats. I hope that’s what everyone answers.
What Superpower Do You Wish You Had? The power to grant myself more time off. It takes a lot of time to run a business, so we don’t get to go on vacations nearly as often as I’d like. (Ed: Doesn’t the boss get to determine his own vacation schedule?!)
In the Past Year, What’s the Latest You’ve Stayed Up and Why? I’m a late worker. I’m always up until at least 4-4:30 AM, but I’ve pulled a couple of 7AM nights when there were client deadlines. Thankfully SeamlessWeb supports 24-hour deliveries.
Plans for Tonight? Work! And catching up on Breaking Bad. We’ve been trying to get up to speed on it, so got the DVDs and have been plowing through them to catch up to what’s getting broadcast now.
