Here at Grubhub, our employees are pretty obsessed with food. Every day, we’re making sure delicious food finds its way to your door….and to ours. Say what? Correct, we too order from Grubhub (so meta).
With our “What I Ate in a Week” series, you’ll get a sneak peek into the lives of actual — never not hungry — Grubhub team members. A nice benefit that happens to come with our jobs is what we call “mealperks” — our weekly Grubhub stipend. Clearly, we’re using this to get the best bites in town each and every week.
On deck, we have: Nick, a Senior Associate on our Social Media team. Get the lowdown on his delivery highlights of the week and top ordering hacks.
Let’s meet Nick:
Hi there, I’m Nick. Fasten your seatbelts because I’m going to take you on my epic food journey over the span of one week. Some more about moi: I’m a Houston, TX transplant to NYC currently living with my husband and our dog in Long Island City, Queens — nestled on the border of Brooklyn and Queens and just across the river from Manhattan. This gives us unique access to some of the best restaurants in all three boroughs. #Winning
First thing’s first: I’m gluten free, and have been since I was four. Growing up gluten free didn’t hamper my love for food though, and I think you’ll see there are still countless options available for delivery. Because I’m conscious about what I eat, I always try to spring for the healthier options when ordering in. Don’t get me wrong: I’ve been known to down an order of fries or the occasional milkshake, but in general I try to balance it out with healthy alternatives.
And here are my top delivery eats from last week…
Brunch from Firefly
Sunday brunch in our house can only mean one thing: bacon! We have a fave restaurant called Firefly that delivers to our apartment, so today we’re going with our usuals: I opted for the huevos rancheros with bacon and my hubby went with a bacon, caramelized onion and gruyere omelette. Even our dog Bella got a piece of the action. Check out that presentation! It looks just like it would on a plate at the restaurant. I love Firefly’s attention to detail when it comes to packaging up our food — they put the same care and consideration for a delivery order as they do in the restaurant. And that makes for a better brunch in my book!
Sushi from Sushi Time
One of the first things people ask me when they find out I work for Grubhub is “OMG you must get TONS of food”…and they are correct. Between our mealperks and the frequent surprise catered breakfast and lunches, we are plenty happy and well-fed. For today’s lunch, we had sushi ordered in from Sushi Time for the NYC office. I went with the classic tuna roll and a salmon roll wrapped in cucumber instead of rice. Definitely a different taste than a standard sushi roll but delicious nonetheless!
Roasted Chicken from Mulberry and Vine
The weather was gorgeous today, so I decided to treat myself to a little walk down 5th Avenue. Before leaving the office, I placed an order for pickup from one of my favorite lunch spots, Mulberry & Vine. The estimated pickup time was just 15 minutes — perfect for a quick walk down a few blocks. I went with the roasted chicken breast over brown rice, served with two sides. One thing I love about this place is they get so experimental and fun with their side selections. Today I went with a tomato, cucumber, feta, & mint salad paired with shaved brussels, fennel, dates and lemon. Talk about a winning combination! I also decided to treat myself to their signature charred avocado. Now I know what you’re thinking: CHARRED avocado?? But trust me, it’s life-changing. They take half an avocado lightly charred and stuff it with greek yogurt, lime, parsley, non-GMO canola oil, and top it with sea salt and pumpkin seeds. Get. Into. It.
Staycation Bowl from Fresh Leaf Cafe
As I’ve said all my life, eating gluten free doesn’t mean eating boring. Sure, you have to pay closer attention to ingredient lists and how your food is prepared, but from a variety standpoint: there are plenty of options. Thursdays are usually packed with back-to-back meetings, so I have to remember to find time to put my lunch order in. I like to live dangerously, so today I decided to try something new: the Staycation Bowl from Fresh Leaf Cafe. They take a bed of kale salad topped with tandoori chicken, pineapple, pico de gallo and avocado. It might sound like an odd combo, but the flavor profile is da bomb. It can be a leap of faith breaking out of your usual order rut and trying new things, but it can definitely pay off.
Turkey Burger from Locanut
This week I applied my mealperks credit to one of the first things I ever ordered to the office. A restaurant called Locanut has a seasoned turkey burger wrapped in collard greens instead of bread. It’s perfect for gluten free kids like myself, or for those looking to cut down on carbs. The turkey patty is seasoned to perfection and is topped with their super-secret sauce, which even though they keep the recipe under lock and key, is guaranteed gluten free. Roasted sweet potato fries make the perfect compliment to this protein-packed lunch. A definite highlight is the customization of the delivery packaging — can you tell I’m a regular? 😉
