Here at Grubhub, our employees are pretty obsessed with food. Every day, we’re making sure delicious food finds its way to your door…and to ours. Say what? Correct, we too order from Grubhub (so meta).
With our “What I Ate in a Week” series, you’ll get a sneak peek into the lives of actual — never not hungry — Grubhub team members. A nice benefit that happens to come with our jobs is what we call “mealperks” — our weekly Grubhub stipend. Clearly, we’re using this to get the best bites in town each and every week.
On deck, we have: Steven, a Senior Specialist on the Data Operations team. Get the lowdown on his delivery highlights of the week and top ordering hacks.
Lets meet Steven.
Hi, my name is Steven. I was born and raised in the city of San Francisco (never left). I grew up in the Hayes Valley neighborhood, but moved to the Outer Sunset 13 years ago (pre-ridiculous rent).
In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, and photography. My favorite hobbies revolve around Martial Arts. I have experience in wrestling, karate, Shaolin Chuan, boxing, and Krav Maga. Currently, I train in Muay Thai kickboxing and I’m a practitioner of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu.
My favorite cuisines are: Thai, Korean, soul food, and Italian. Some of my favorite dishes are: pad see ew, kalbi, burgers, fried chicken, lasagna, and pizza. Yes, I love Hawaiian pizza…and yes, pineapple belongs on pizza.
And here are my top delivery eats from last week…
Roasted Turkey Breast from SF Deli and Wine
This is pretty much my go-to spot for lunch when I’m indecisive, hungry, and have my mealperks to use. While SF Deli and Wine has a number of different sandwich options, I like to keep it simple. The Roasted Turkey Breast is my favorite. First, we start with delicious Dutch crunch bread. (Is there a better sandwich bread? Nope.) Second, we add pesto mayo, yellow mustard, sliced pickles, sliced black olives, tomatoes, and romaine lettuce. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll add bacon too. Lastly, I like to leave a cute little note in the special instructions asking them to toast the bread as well–toasted bread changed my life.
I love ordering from SF Deli and Wine because they are fast and efficient. It also helps that they are literally next door and open early (I eat lunch at 10:30am). Go here for the sandwiches. Also, the artistic guy that works there whips up a great drawing on my bag.
Chicken Teriyaki Sub from Charley’s Philly Steaks
Are you starting to see a trend here? I love sandwiches and burgers, aka foods that have bread, meat and veggies all mixed together. Now, here’s another great restaurant that opens early at 10 a.m. This might seem like just another chain restaurant tucked inside the food court of a mall, but don’t let that fool you. Charley’s Philly Steaks has a variety of fresh Philly style sandwiches fit for everyone’s tastes.
The best, IMHO, is the Chicken Teriyaki Sub. The toasted bread carefully holds together the delicious grilled chicken and onions, crispy romaine lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and is topped off with a generous dose of mayo and drizzled with sweet teriyaki sauce.
Pepperoni Pizza by North Beach Pizza
Pizza has always been one of my favorite foods. I can eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, and dessert. I’ll eat it hot or cold, baked or microwaved, with red or white sauce, extra/double/triple pineapples (mmmmmm), but please no anchovies. It’s really hard to let me down when it comes to pizza, but North Beach Pizza does a great job of bringing me to tasty food heaven.
Although I do enjoy ridiculous amounts of toppings on my pizza sometimes, I also like to keep it simple. Pepperoni is probably the one topping that I always have to have on a pizza no matter what.
This location in particular has coupons (score) and I ordered the Large Pepperoni Pizza Special. If you’re looking for cheesy, pepperoni-y, crusty goodness, look no further.
Papaya Salad and Pineapple Fried Rice by Sri Thai Cuisine
If you don’t know what you want to eat for dinner, Thai food is always the best option. Yes, the best option. When have you ever eaten Thai food and regretted it? Never! Obviously. Now, even though I’ve lived in the neighborhood for a while, I’ll admit I only recently discovered Sri Thai Cuisine. You know when you meet someone and it’s like you are soulmates, and you wish you met earlier? Well, that’s how I feel about Sri Thai. (Is it possible to be soulmates with food?)
Now I’ll admit I rarely order Papaya Salad, but I felt like giving it a shot since the rest of the food here is amazing. Traditionally, papaya salad is spicy, but this one is on the sweet and sour side. It has all fresh vegetables and even has shrimp! My other favorite Thai dish is Pineapple Fried Rice. You can never really go wrong with fried rice, especially when it has pineapples. It’s also topped off with prawns, cashews and raisins, which give the dish a sweet and crunchy taste to remember.
(Other delicious dishes (not pictured): Yellow Curry, Green Curry and Mas Samun Curry.)
Big Papa Burger from Papa Mak’s Burgers
I LOVE HAMBURGERS. If I had to choose between hamburgers and pizza, I might have to choose hamburgers. Papa Mak’s Burgers is a true gem of the Outer Sunset district. You might think that just because it’s the only burger joint in the area that they might not try as hard, but you would be so wrong. I’ve had a lot of burgers in my life and I must say that the Big Papa Burger is probably one of the best burgers ever (so good that you will probably throw your hands in the air like a true burger lover). It comes with double beef patties, Mak sauce, onions and lettuce on a sesame seed bun. Every bite is juicy, crunchy, and delicious.
This is the second time I’ve eaten here in two weeks, and I can’t wait to eat it again. Also, with this burger you get a choice of side; I highly suggest that you get the sweet potato tater tots. Other great life decisions include the: Beer Battered Onion Rings, Mushroom Deluxe Burger, and Papa Burger.
