Eating clean in 2019? Order a salad. Had a big breakfast or lunch and want something a bit lighter for your next meal? Definitely order a salad. Really went hard on carbs this weekend? You guessed it–order a salad.
Sometimes ordering a salad seems like the simplest thing, but we’ve put together a guide with our top tips on everything from building your bowl to getting the most bang for your buck.
Know your greens
Yep, there’s a lot of lettuce variations, friends. You’ll likely see a whole host of options, including:
- The crunchy classics: think iceberg and romaine.
- Healthy, yet tiny: arugula and frisée here.
- Vitamin-packed, fibrous greens: hello, kale and swiss chard!
Featured salads vs. BYOB
Before you get wild and start painstakingly building your own bowl…topping by topping…take a look at the featured bowls your go-to salad spot offers. Sometimes you might find that it’s almost exactly like your expertly assembled salad–minus a small ingredient or two–and a couple of dollars cheaper.
Dress it up or down
Asking for dressing on the side is always a safe bet. Whether you’re the type of person that wants the faintest coating or you’re the kind of person that says, “keep going” after a third of the dressing bottle is gone…when it’s on the side, the level is entirely up to you. (Oh, and if you’re the latter of the two people we just mentioned, tacking on an additional side of dressing is always worth it.)
Living healthy? Why not go for pick up.
It might seem like an obvious choice, but if you’re living your best healthy life…why not take a walk to go pick up your leafy greens? Stretch your legs for a little break.
Recycle, but reuse first
If your salad arrives in a plastic bowl, think twice before immediately tossing it in the recycling bin. If it’s a sturdy material, hand wash it and save it for future leftovers!
