What I Ate in a Week: Demarquis’ Food Diary

Here at Grubhub, our employees are pretty obsessed with food. Every day, we’re making sure delicious food finds its way to your door….and to ours. Say what? Correct, we too order from Grubhub (so meta).

With our “What I Ate in a Week” series, you’ll get a sneak peek into the lives of actual — never not hungry — Grubhub team members. A nice benefit that happens to come with our jobs is what we call “mealperks” — our weekly Grubhub stipend. Clearly, we’re using this to get the best bites in town each and every week.

On deck, we have: Demarquis, an associate on our Public Relations team. Get the lowdown on his delivery highlights of the week and top ordering hacks.

Let’s meet Demarquis:

Hi, I’m Demarquis! A sports junkie and Chicago native currently living in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Living next to the park and with easy access to Wicker Park and Logan Square, I tend to stay active by playing basketball, soccer and any other sport you can think of. Although I burn a lot of calories, I need plenty more to stay focused, so I like to take advantage of fast-casual restaurants. As one of the pickier eaters in the office with a weird fixation for sweets, let me introduce you to this odd adventure called my food journey.

And here are my top delivery eats from last week…

Burger, M Burger

A Double M Burger from M Burger

M Burger is the way to go if you recently skipped a meal or are just in the mood for something hearty. For some odd reason, I find myself in this mood far too often, so this is one of my go-to dishes to express reorder. The Double M Burger consists of two patties, two layers of cheese, pickles and bacon. Sure, it’s a pretty typical combination, but it’s their ‘secret’ sauce that it sets it apart from others. (I even use it for my fries too!) The great part about M Burger is that their menu continues to expand and now I’m able to enjoy it with my vegetarian friends; I just point them to their new “Impossible Burger.”

Rice Bowl, Qdoba

Grilled Adobo Chicken Burrito Bowl from Qdoba

I didn’t want to venture too far from the office today, so I decided to order from Qdoba. Since it’s right down the street (and the weather was great) I ordered it for pick up and took a little stroll. My burrito bowl consisted of chicken, rice, corn, peppers, bacon, cilantro, and queso! I always like to emphasize the queso since it’s free of charge and brings each ingredient together to create a rich and creamy mix.

A Rice Bowl from NaanSense

I’m back to my plain-Jane ways, so I ordered a chicken rice bowl from NaanSense. That’s exactly it: rice, chicken, cilantro, cucumber, and tikka (savory tomato sauce). It’s simple but satisfying and it’s gone in minutes every time I order it. For the more adventurous eater — don’t worry — they offer four sauces and chutneys, along with nine toppings. I’d try them out, but my rice bowl is perfect just the way it is.

A Pepperoni Slice from Union Squared

You may not be familiar with Detroit-style pizza, but it’s time to get up to speed on this new craze. Detroit-style pizza is a rectangular pizza that has a thick, super crisp crust that’s often layered with brick cheese (and toppings like pepperoni). It took approximately 16 years to stray away from cheese pizza, so adding pepperoni is basically as far as I’m willing to venture. Anyway, the pizza at Union Squared is phenomenal! Very rich in flavor and super filling! Order a slice — or actually, probably a whole pie — with your favorite beverage and enjoy! (Fun fact: you can even order gluten-free pizza here.)

Chicken, Jerk Chicken, Jamaican Food

Jerk Chicken from Mr. Brown’s Lounge

You probably didn’t see this dish coming, but jerk chicken is a personal favorite of mine. And of course, I believe it’s important to finish the week off a strong note. Good excuse, right? Thanks. So, I opened up my Grubhub app and ordered the Mr. Brown’s Long Island Jerk Chicken entree! As you can see, it’s one of the most wonderful dishes ever invented. The chicken marinates (bone-in) and then is dry rubbed with Jamaican herbs and spices, before it’s cooked on a charcoal grill to give it that savory and smoky taste. The cabbage brings some nice balance and is essential if you can’t handle the heat. If you’re ever in Chicago and feel in the mood for some authentic Jamaican food, make it a priority to order from Mr. Brown’s Lounge!

Tune in next week for the latest edition of “What I Ate in a Week.” Will it make you hungry? Probably...but, we can help with that.
