Here at Grubhub, our employees are pretty obsessed with food. Every day, we’re making sure delicious food finds its way to your door…and to ours. Say what? Correct, we too order from Grubhub (so meta).
With our “What I Ate in a Week” series, you’ll get a sneak peek into the lives of actual — never not hungry — Grubhub team members. A nice benefit that happens to come with our jobs is what we call “mealperks” — our weekly Grubhub stipend. Clearly, we’re using this to get the best bites in town each and every week.
On deck, we have: Omar, a Senior Operations Specialist at Grubhub. Get the lowdown on his delivery highlights of the week and top ordering hacks.
Meet Omar.
I have been with Grubhub since August 2017. I started off as an Operation Specialist and as of last February I was promoted to a Senior Operations Specialist. I was born in Mexico, in the beautiful state of Guanajuato. My family and I came to the U.S. in 1995 when I was three years old. Delaware was home for 23 years. But as of September 2016, Philadelphia has been my home. I made the “City of Brotherly Love” my home and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve fallen deeply in love with howmuch this city has to offer, especially when it comes to food. And without further ado…
And here are my top eats from last week…
Mexican Torta from El Torta & Tacos California
Starting off with one of my all time favorite meals as you see in the first picture (not a football, but it is definitely the size of a football)… is a Mexican Torta from El Torta & Tacos California. This was my first time trying out this place and I can truly say that it won’t be the last time that I do. It made me really happy to find this place, because it’s pretty hard to find really authentic Mexican food around here. The Torta on the menu is called “La Loca Torta” and it has ham, pulled pork, Mexican sausage, eggs and sausage. It’s also served with lettuce, onions, avocado, jalapeño and some shredded cheese. AMAZINGGGGGGG! If you’re ever around Philly and want to have some good Mexican food I definitely recommend this place…you might even see me picking my order up there!
Pho Tai from Pho 20
Do I really have to say anything about this dish? We all know that Pho was the best thing that was ever invented…right? But anyway, here we have Pho Tai (from one of my faves, Pho 20) which is rare steak with fresh bean sprout, basil, onions, cilantro, scallion, lime, and hot pepper in a steaming bowl of broth. I can literally have this at any given time or weather. But of course it’s best on a cold or rainy day…or when you’re in a cold office with the AC on full blast.
Twisted Cuban Panini from Torch-Wood Cafe
The Torch-Wood Cafe is super well-known for their amazing sandwiches. One of my favorites (because there’s a few) is the Twisted Cuban Panini. The amount of different flavors in the sandwich is insane. I’ll just say this… the habanero ham that comes with the sandwich is EVERYTHING you never knew you needed in your life.
House Special Lo Mein from New Chef King
If you know me then you certainly know that I am in love with Chinese food… especially when it comes from New Chef King. If I had the chance to eat it everyday, trust and believe that I would. This dish that you see here is the House Special Lo Mein. It’s a very simple dish, but I truly enjoy it every time. That means it’s clearly one of my “express reorder” meals when I don’t want to overthink what I want to eat. The best part about this restaurant is their amazing prices! Such a steal.
Spicy Rolls from Yummy Sushi
Last but not least, this week I had some sushi… and to be completely honest this place really lives up to their name: “Yummy Sushi.” It’s by far one of the best sushi spots in Philly and their prices are even better. I had these three rolls for $12. You really can’t beat that price. My coworker and I ordered lunch together and we easily split the bill via Venmo–so there was no confusion whatsoever in settling up! It’s the little things in life that make you the happiest.
